About Mike

Austin Appellate Lawyer Michael S. Truesdale 
Mike is a solo practitioner focusing primarily on appeals and on complex civil litigation. He is Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.   After leading the appellate practice of a litigation boutique with which he had practiced for ten years, Mike started his solo practice to assist other attorneys and clients navigate the time-consuming and technical aspects of the appellate process.  He places great value on developing long-term relationships with his clients and with their trial counsel.
 
Throughout his career Mike has worked on numerous cases before the Supreme Court of Texas and has handled appeals before the majority of the fourteen Texas intermediate courts of appeals. On a national level, Mike has led state court appeals in other jurisdictions as well, including California and Michigan, and federal appeals in the Fifth and Seventh Circuits, and United States Supreme Court.  

Mike's collegiate career prepared him for his appellate practice.  He graduated cum laude and in Honors Studies from Texas Tech University, where he was a member of the debate team, president of the Honors Society, and a member of Mortar Board.  Thereafter, he earned his Masters Degree from Texas Tech University and served on the faculty as the debate coach.   Mike graduated from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1994, magna cum laude, where he participated in numerous appellate moot court teams.  Some of his law school accomplishes include:

 

  • Managing Editor, and Outstanding Third Year Student, Texas Tech Law Review 
  • National Championship at the American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition
  • Order of the Coif
  • Order of the Barristers
  • Recipient of the George and Sarah Dupree Award, given annually "To the member of the graduating class who, in the opinion of his colleagues, best exemplifies the ability, the integrity, and sense of professional responsibility desired in one soon to join the legal profession."

Mike is admitted to practice in Texas state courts and before all U.S. District Courts in Texas, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fifth, Seventh, Ninth and Eleventh Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court.  He is a member of the Austin Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, the American Bar Association, and the Fifth Circuit Bar Association. He served as Secretary-Treasurer and Chair of the Travis County Bar Association Civil Appellate Section, and has served on the Council for the State Bar of Texas Appellate Section, for which he currently serves as co-chair of the Pro Bono Committee.

Mike has served as a moot court coach for various University of Texas School of Law teams and served on the faculty of the 2006 Texas Equal Access to Justice Motions and Appellate Advocacy Academy. He is a member of the College of the State Bar of Texas, and has served as a director for Reading is Fundamental Austin. He has been named a Texas Super Lawyer in appellate practice in 2009 and a Texas Rising Star Super Lawyer in 2004-2007 in the Thompson Reuter's Law and Politics publications.
